For the second year in a row the Italian Ministry of Health takes part in the “European Veterinary Week” and coordinates the planning of numerous initiatives at the national level, that will take place throughout this year until autumn of next year.
The Ministry of Health will undertake its coordinating activity under the joint sponsorship of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and the collaboration of the Italian Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculties of Medicine and Surgery, the National Federation of Veterinary Associations, the Experimental Zooprophylaxis Institutes and the Regional Health Services.

In particular, the Department for Veterinary Public Health, Nutrition and Food Safety is supervising two “Projects” on behalf of the Ministry of Health: the first is addressed to primary school students and the other one to university students. Both projects are in line with the “Animals + Humans = One health” principle and are considered as proper tools to promote policies to ensure a high level of animal health, to underline the link existing between animal and human health in the light of the growing impact that animal diseases have on public health.

The activities in schools are carried out from May to September. In particular these activities will involve approximately 6,000 primary school children (aged 8-9 years), approximately 100 students per school in 11 different Regions. The schools have been identified based on the location of the Italian Faculties of Veterinary Medicine participating in this initiative. This outreach activity will be performed through meetings of approximately 90 minutes each, with a DVD projection and an interactive discussion with the students. The moderators will be a veterinarian working in a research institute (IZS) or a veterinary -practitioner and a student. Once the activities at schools have been completed, all the teaching and informative material will be available for the Italian schools and it will be possible to download it from a dedicated web site. Furthermore, an initiative will be promoted at national level by which teachers themselves will be invited to encourage a scientific discussion with their students on the veterinary profession and some aspects of animal health and food safety, thanks to special informative material developed by the IZS National Reference Centres and circulated to all Italian primary schools.

As regards the activities performed in universities, so far 7 forums have taken place and additional forums have been scheduled at universities throughout the country for veterinary medicine, medicine and surgery students to exchange their views on certain animal diseases with expert lecturers. These meetings proved to be a valuable tool to foster an active exchange of ideas on animal diseases between future health professionals.
